Rare finds by old masters

Julia Santen Gallery downtown presents vintage poster art

Turkeys are not the most inspiring things to paint, so no major turkey art shows this week. There are, however, some favorite people who are in town and certainly worth a visit.

The Julia Santen Gallery is a vintage poster gallery that normally deals in original, rare, and unusual poster art dating from 1890 to the 1960s. Owner Julia Santen has decided to branch out this fall by adding some works by Old Masters. Santen currently has five Rembrandt etchings and 12 other dry point/etching/lithograph/aquatints by Cezanne, Cassatt, Manet, Pissarro, Renoir, Helleu, Chagall, Leger, Rouault and de Koonig.

“Mere et Enfant a la Tour Eiffel” by Marc Chagall will be part of the exhibit at Julia Santen Gallery.

One of the most notable of these is an etching by Rembrandt called “Adoration of the Shepherds.” The piece portrays a touching Christian manger scene, complete with all the animals surrounding Christ and the shepherds. There is also a 1954 lithography by Chagall that depicts a mother and child at the Eiffel Tower. An expert in vintage works, Santen says that this signed and numbered piece is “a very good impression of this scarce, early print.”

Yet another example of these rare finds is an 1898 lithograph by Toulouse-Lautrec that even has the artist’s red ink stamp in the left corner.

If you are a serious collector, this is a great opportunity to get your hands on some work by some of the most famous names in art history. Visit the Julia Santen Gallery in person at 188 King St., at www.juliasantengallery.com or call 534-0758

blue stone storageJuly, 2008 we started the process of tearing up lower king street- removing the old trolley tracks, putting in new sewage lines, ripping up the old sidewalks and laying bluestone, making new curbs, adding lamp posts and new trees and blacktopping the street.

The last 16 months could be called ’survival of the fittest’ with the retail stores;  not only did we have a recession on our hands, but also a daily battle with construction noise and obstacles that have turned tourists away.  Check out the ‘Before’ and ‘After’ photos below and come visit us on November 12th for the ribbon cutting! removing track

June 2, 2009, 4:00 pm Borel Has a Little Ali in Him
By Joe Drape
Calvin Borel not only refused to back off his guarantee that the Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird will capture the 141st running of the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, but he even borrowed a Muhammad Ali verse to add some panache on his declaration.

“When he sings, he sings,” Borel said, mangling Ali’s signature “sting like a bee” line.

Borel, however, was clear-headed enough to parry a tougher question. Shortly after watching replays of Rachel Alexandra — whom he was riding — just barely hold off Mike Smith on Mine That Bird in the final strides of the Preakness Stakes, Borel was asked if he had ridden Mine That Bird, would the gelding have caught the superfilly.

Borel was at Madison Square Garden Tuesday afternoon, where he was reminded that Ali had won quite a few fights there. Neither the Greatest nor Kanye West has anything to fear from Borel’s rhymes.
